FRERE, Margaret Hanbury

1866 - 1956

Margaret Hanbury Frere, was born at Horham Rectory, Suffolk on 1 September 1866, daughter of Revd Edward Hanbury Frere, rector of Horham, and his wife Ellen née Allen, who married at Horham in 1858. Like her sister Amy [q.v.], she studied at Wimbledon Art College under Lexden Leonard Pocock (1850-1919) and Alfred Drury (1856-1944). Watercolour and pastel painter who exhibited in London and in East Anglia with HM Queen Mary purchasing her work. Her father died at Horham Rectory on 30 December 1899, when Margaret and three of sister moved to 45 Unthank Road, Norwich, all were unmarried. In 1911 Margaret is described as 'painter artist' and, with her three sisters, had moved along the road to 27 Unthank Road. A member and exhibitor at the Woodpecker Art Club, later the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle, 1928-1956 from Norwich. She also exhibited at Bond Street Gallery; Ipswich Fine Art Club and Norwich & Norwich Art Circle. In 1939, a artist & needlework, living at 27 Unthank Road, Norwich with four of her unmarried sisters including Amy, and where she died on 11 February 1956, aged 89, she was unmarried.
