FRERE, Amy Hanbury

1878 - 1961

Amy Hanbury Frere was born at Horham, Suffolk on 18 May 1878, daughter of Revd Edward Hanbury Frere (1826-30 December 1899), rector of Horham, and his wife Ellen Allen (1838-24 March 1895), daughter of Revd John Taylor Allen, vicar of Stradbroke, who married at Stradbroke, Suffolk on 14 January 1858. Her mother died in 1895 and the family lived at Horham until the death of their father in 1899, when they moved to Norwich. Amy studied at Wimbledon College of Art at 68 Merton Road, Wimbledon, under Edith May Finlinson (1864-1949), where she was a boarder in 1901. She exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member of the Woodpecker Sketch Club, later known as the Norwich Art Circle, 1902-1958, from Norwich and she exhibited black & white drawings at the Norwich Art Circle at the Assembly Rooms, Bank Plain 1902-1903. In 1911, a 32-year-old 'painter artist', living with three of her sisters, including Margaret Hanbury Frere, at 27 Unthank Road, Norwich. In 1939, an artist & needlework, still living at 27 Unthank Road, Norwich with four unmarried sisters, including Margaret Frere. Amy Hanbury Frere was still of 27 Unthank Road, when she died at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, Norwich on 18 December 1961, aged 84, she was unmarried.
