GREEN, David

1929 - 2015

David B. Green was born at Ormskirk, Lancashire in 1929, son of William Green and his wife Edna née Suckling, who married in London in 1924, from a family of artists and designers. David studied at Exeter in 1946 and in 1949, after completing his national Service in the Royal Artillery, he entered the Royal College of Art School of Ceramics but changed direction and decided to study traditional painting and printmaking methods at Hornsey College of Art 1949-1953, painting with Jesse Dale Cast (1900-1976), etching with Norman Janes (1892-1980) and lithography with Henry Holzer (1907-2007). Between 1953 and 1957 he taught part-time at Harrow, Willesden and at Medway Colleges, and for the next 24 years taught full-time in the ceramic department of Carlisle College of Art and the school of three-dimensional design at Bath Academy of Art. In 1983, he left teaching to return to his own work and in 1990 came from the West Country to live in Suffolk. During his years in full-time teaching, he published several practical books on pottery and wood sculpture including 'Understanding Pottery Glazes' (1963) and 'Experimenting with Pottery' (1971) and more recently has embarked upon publishing limited editions under his own imprint, 'Greensprings Press of Woodbridge', starting with 'Suffolk Estuaries' (1998) and 'At the Water's Edge' (1999). He exhibited at the Royal Academy; the Royal Watercolour Society; the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and the Leicester Galleries. An exhibition of his work was held at King's Circus Gallery, Bath in 1983 and has also exhibited at Century Gallery in Henley-on-Thames, Heffer Gallery in Cambridge, Linfield Gallery in Wells also in Rye, and the Wigmore Hall in London and locally at Aldeburgh and Snape. He married at Battle, Sussex in 1956, Gill Green née Black, and together with his wife, has had regular exhibitions of his watercolours and ran the Boatyard Gallery at Felixstowe Ferry, Suffolk. His book illustrations include 'Good Food from Farthinghoe' (1981) and 'English Stone Building' (1983). David Green died in June 2015, being survived by his wife.
