BURRELL, Hon. Catherine Mary Sermonda

1874 - 1958

Born in 1874, daughter of Willoughby Merrik Campbell Burrell [q.v.], 5th Baron Gwydyr (1841-1915) of Stoke Park, Ipswich, who succeeded in 1909, and his wife Mary (1850-1898), daughter of Sir John Banks, who married on 4 September 1873. Mary amassed an enormous collection of Wagner documents of every kind and planned a complete life of Wagner but only the immense first volume was published covering 21 years (1898); the other material is now at Philadelphia (Catalogue pubd. 1929). Catherine was a painter in oils and watercolour of portraits and landscapes, a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1900-1901 and as S. Burrell, exhibited in 1900 two oils 'Lord Gwyder' and 'The Countess of Lindsey' and the following year exhibited two watercolours ‘Flower Field near Haarlem’ and ‘Eilenroc, Corsica’. She married on 16 April 1902, Sir John Henniker-Heaton, 2nd Bart (1877-1963). In 1915 she was the heiress of the 5th and last Baron Gwyder, her two elder brothers having died. She died on 24 November 1958 leaving several children John Victor Peregrine (1903-1971) [later 3rd Bart.], Peter Joseph (1909-1976), Clement Algernon Charles (1909-1983) and Mary Araluen Elizabeth.
