Ernest Robert Gribble

Ernest Fobert Gribble was born at Marylebone, London in 1885, son of John Gribble (1850-1931), cabinet manufacturer in Tottenham Court Road, London, and his wife Louisa née Jeffery (1851-1925), who married at Plymouth on 6 June 1870, Bernard Gribble (1872-1962), the marine and portrait painter and Ernest were related. In 1911, Ernest was a cabinet maker, working for his father at 135 Chapter Road, Cricklewood, London and trained at the London School of Arts and Crafts, under William Letherby (1857-1931). Ernest came to Ipswich about 1912 and, after service in the Royal Flying Corps, married in 1918,Eleanor Mary Gribble née Woolmer. Ernest worked for reproduction antique furniture manufacturers, Frederick Tibbenham Ltd of Turret Lane, Ipswich where he became factory manager and oversaw refurbishments at the Dorchester, London and of Deacon's Bank's London branch. His main work was in furniture and woodwork and was the author, with Herbert Cescinsky, of 'Early English Furniture and Woodwork' (1922) and of an article in 'Burlington Magazine', 'Westminster Hall and its Roof' (Vol. 40, No. 227, Feb 1922). A Fellow of the Royal Society For the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and was awarded an MBE for his work. An honorary member at the Ipswich Art Club 1925-1964 but does not seem to have exhibited. In 1939, a factory manager cabinet maker, living at 17 Gippeswyk Avenue, Ipswich with his wife Eleanor Mary. Ernest Fobert Gribble was of 17 Gippeswyk Avenue when he died at the Ipswich & East Suffolk Hospital, Anglesea Road, Ipswich on 29 October 1964, aged 79.
