BUTLER, Hester

1877 - 1935

Hester Butler, was born at Northchurch, Hertfordshire in 1877, daughter of Revd George Hew Butler (1847-1926) and his wife Florence Augusta Agnes Annie née Measor (1855-1918), who married at Westminster, London in 1875. In 1881, a 4 year old living at 12 East Park Terrace, Southampton, where her father was the 33 year old curate of Holy Trinity, Southampton, with his 26 year old wife Florence, born at London and Hester’s three siblings, Georgina Hester Mary 5, Alma Dora 2 and newly born Stephen Seymour, all born at Northchurch, and they retained four indoor servants. Hester studied at London School of Art and at Brussells Academy when her father took the vicarage of Gazeley, near Newmarket, Suffolk. A portrait painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1910 from Gazeley Vicarage, The Street, Moulton Lane, near Newmarket, and in 1928 from Harting, Petersfield, Hampshire where her father had died in 1926. Hester was of 11 Oakley Street, Chelsea and died at the Royal Bethlem Hospital, Beckenham, Kent on 22 September 1935, aged 57, she was unmarried.
