Martin Laurence

Born at Kirkuk, Iraq in 1952. He began his career as an engraver and graphic designer, and studied at the Ipswich and the Norwich Schools of Art, attending classes in portrait sculpture and life drawing before taking a B.Ed. in Art and Design at the University of East Anglia. He married in Deben, Suffolk in 1975, Karen J. Slocombe and secondly at Norwich in 1996, Lois C. Hill. After an early exhibiting career during which he held one-man shows in the UK, the Middle East and the USA, his interest in painting and printmaking began to be replaced by drawing, and for a number of years devoted his time solely to life drawing. By the mid-1990's his attention returned to landscape and he resumed solo exhibitions also participating in many group shows. After the discipline of the figure and the austerity of pencil and charcoal, the scale of his work became larger, with monochrome being replaced with vibrant colour working in a variety of mixed media; oil, acrylic, collage, ink, charcoal, watercolour and gouache, singly or in combinations on paper or canvas and his work is featured on book covers, in specialist art books and magazines. In 2008-09 he was 'artist in residence' for the National Trust as part of the 'Stone Eye' project and this work was exhibited at the Peter Pears gallery, Aldeburgh in 2009 and at the Theatre Royal, Norwich in 2011. His solo exhibitions include St Gregory’s Art Centre, Norwich 1994; The Frederick Gallery, Raveningham 1995; The Lantern Gallery, Walberswick 1996; The Music House Gallery, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh 1998; Frames Gallery, Norwich from 1998; Bircham Contemporary Art, Holt 2003; John Russell Gallery, Ipswich 2002 & 2004; Gallerie Last, Zurich, Switzerland from 2005 and at Mandells Gallery, Norwich from 2011. A member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1990-2000 and has been a member of the Norwich 20 Group since 2008 and its chairman 2015-2017. He opened a studio as part of the 'Creek Creative' collective in Faversham, Kent in 2010-2011 during which time he exhibited at Stark Gallery, Canterbury and Store Street Gallery, Bloomsbury, London but lives at Norwich. His work is in public, private and corporate collections including the National Trust, Targetfollow PLC and Deloitte and Touche (Zurich).
