LLOYD-JONES, Conway

1846 - 1897

Conway Llewellyn Lloyd-Jones was born at St Bees, Whitehaven, Cumbria in 1846, son of Revd David Lloyd Jones (1817-1 November 1863) and his wife Catherine Julia née Francis (1814-15 February 1882), who married at Bloomsbury, London on 30 November 1843. In 1851, Conway was a 4-year-old, living at Parsonage House, Downham, Clitheroe, Lancashire with his parents, 33-year-old David, curate of Downham, who was born at Plas Madoc, Denbigh, and 37-year-old Catherine, born in London. His father, as rector of Stainton le Dale, Lincoln, died in 1863, aged 45. In 1866 Conway was appointed a temporary clerk in the Savings Bank Department of the Civil Service but by 1881, a 34-year-old 'landscape artist', living at 'Rowlands', Wimborne Minster, Dorset with his 67-year-old widowed mother Catherine and two unmarried siblings, Amy 32 and Idwal 29. Lloyd-Jones was a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1878-1895 and may have had a 'holiday home' in the county and in 1881 exhibited from Beauchamp House, Wimborne Minster, thirteen pictures including an oil 'Heigh-Ho! the Holly' and watercolours 'Cold Hill Firs', 'Countisbury in a Fog' and 'Ivybridge', in 1882 he had eleven pictures on display, in 1883 seven, two oils 'Lake Edwa' and 'Returning from School' and five watercolours including 'Wild Wales, and in 1884 four oils 'Scene on the Stour, Dorset', 'Autumn Afternoon', 'Two for Joy' and 'Scene on the Dart'. These seem to have been his last at Ipswich as on 24 March 1884, under the Bankruptcy Act, was held the first meeting of his creditors. He also seems to have been a bit of an inventor as in January 1885 he applied for patent 13245 'for improvements in lids for boxes, cases, barrels or baskets, on in and connected with the means of fastening the same'. Conway Llewellyn Lloyd-Jones was buried at St James the Less, Pangboourne, Berkshire on 23 February 1897, aged 50.
