MONCUR, Jane

1890 - 1983

Jane Moncur was born at Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland on 9 February 1890, daughter of James Moncur (1858-1933) and his wife Margaret (1859-14 December 1949). Jane was educated at East Burgh School, Forfar but by 1911, Jeannie, as she was known, Moncur was a 21-year-old art student living at Rowley Bank, Castle Church, Stafford, Staffordshire with her parents, 52-year-old James, county surveyor, and 52-year-old Margaret, and siblings James 27 all born in Scotland with Jessie 17, George 14, Andrew 12 born at Stafford. Jeannie studied at Stafford School of Art under Hubert Wellington (1879-1967) then at Westminster School of Art 1916-1918, with the Camden Town Group member Harold Gilman (1876-1919). Jane married at Stafford in 1921, sculptor Herbert William Palliser (3 May 1883-9 October 1963), and they had one daughter. A painter whose tutors and husband had a major influence on her work which she exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing with the London Group of Artists; New English Art Club and the former Yoxford Art Club. In 1939, she was living at Rose Cottage, Clavering, Saffron Walden, Essex with her husband Herbert and on the death of her husband in 1963, she moved to The Old Rectory, Middleton, Saxmundham, Suffolk. Jane Palliser died at The Old Rectory, Middleton on 4 March 1983. She painted under her maiden name of Jane Moncur.
