Simon Read

Born at Bristol, Gloucestershire in 1949, son of Wallace Frederick Read and his wife Doris V. née Scriven, who married at Bristol in 1941. He studied at Somerset College of Art 1968-1969, University of Leeds 1969-1973 and Chelsea School of Art 1973-1975 and won an Arts Council Major Award in 1978. He went on to teach at academies such as Slade School of Fine Art, Chelsea School of Art, North-East London Polytechnic, Reading and Manchester Universities and Bath Academy of Art. An artist with a great deal of experience across several media and for many years enjoyed considerable success working through museum and gallery context including developing an expanded interpretation of photography. In 1980 he purchased a seagoing barge in Holland and brought it back to Suffolk and Boat Jacoba at Lime Kiln Quay, Woodbridge, Suffolk served as his home and studio base. Since then has travelling annually around the East Anglian Coast. Simon has exhibited widely with solo shows including Chelsea Art School Gallery and Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon, Canada both 1984, Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh 1989, Norsk Museum for Fotografi, Horten Norway 1997, Kapil Jariwala Gallery, London 1999, Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich 2000 and The Gallery, Southwark Park, London 2001.
