SOWTER, [Katie] Kathleen Julia

1944 - 2003

As Kathleen Julia Littlewood, she was born at Reading, Berkshire on 3 March 1944, daughter of artist and illustrator William Littlewood (1893-1945) and his wife Kathleen née Sheldrake, who married at Durham in 1925. She studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art 1965-1968 under Maurice de Sausmarez (1915-1969) and was a picture restorer at Simon Carter Gallery in Woodbridge for seveal years. She married at Maidenhead, Berkshire in 1973, Michael E. Sowter and works under the name Katie Sowter. A representationable artist in various media and noted for large pastels, a member of the Suffolk Group and exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; 'Drawings for All' at Gainsborough's House, Sudbury; the Quay Gallery, Sudbury; the 'Eastern Open' at Kings Lynn, Norfolk; 'Town Art', Unity Wharf, with the Monday People, Suffolk and at the Ipswich Art Society in 1997 she exhibited 'Still Life with Ocean'. She lived at Rattleden Hall, near Bury St Edmunds and at Chancery Lane, Debenham, Suffolk and died at Ipswich in 2003.
