SOWTER, Katie

1944 - 2003

As Kathleen Julia Littlewood, she was born at Canburst Cottage, Knowl Hill, Wokingham, Berkshire on 3 March 1944, daughter of artist and illustrator William Cook Littlewood (21 October 1890-21 July 1985) and his wife Kathleen née Sheldrake (11 February 1904-1977), who married at Durham in 1925. Known as Katie, she studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art 1965-1968 under Maurice de Sausmarez (1915-1969) and was a picture restorer at Simon Carter Gallery in Woodbridge, Suffolk for several years. She married at Maidenhead, Berkshire in 1973, Michael Edward Sowter (11 February 1940-20 October 1987) and painted under the name Katie Sowter. A representational artist in various media and noted for large pastels, a member of the Suffolk Group of Artists and exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and showing her 'Drawings for All' at Gainsborough's House Gallery, Sudbury also exhibiting at the Quay Theatre Gallery, Sudbury; the 'Eastern Open' at Kings Lynn, Norfolk; 'Town Art', Unity Wharf, with the Monday People, Suffolk. At the Ipswich Art Society in 1997, she exhibited 'Still Life with Ocean'. She lived at Rattlesden Hall, near Bury St Edmund's, where her husband died in 1987, and at Chancery Lane, Debenham, Suffolk. Kathleen Julia Sowter died on 30 August 2003.
