STERNDALE-BENNETT, [Robin] Robert Dawson

1914 - 2006

Born at Uppingham, Rutland on 4 September 1914, son of Robert Sterndale-Bennett (12 September 1880-1963) and his wife Gwendolen Dorothy née Risch-Miller (16 January 1892-1985), who married at Kensington, London in 1912, his father was director of music at Uppingham School, and in 1939 were living at The Cottage, Uppingham. Robert passed out from the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and served in the Navy until his retirement as a Commander in 1964. Secretary of the Royal Harwich Yacht Club 1969-1975 during which time he developed his painting skills, having some tuition under Michael Norman [q.v.] and at Ipswich Art School. A committee member of the Ipswich Art Club and exhibited from 'Long Reach', Chelmondiston, Ipswich in 1978 'Barges at Sea', in 1979 'Spritsail Barge' and in 1980 'Great Barrier Reef' and 'Father and Son' and in 1990 from Westhorpe, Lower Road, Grundisburgh, Woodbridge 'Freston Reach, River Orwell' and was a regular exhibitor including in 1997 'Stormy Weather' and 'Dolls'. A founder member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Painters in 1979 and has had several solo shows at Gallery 44 Aldeburgh and has illustrated Geoffrey Morgan's 'East Anglia-Its Tideways and Byways'. He died at his home in Wolverstone, Suffolk on 16 July 2006, aged 91 and buried in the local St Michael's church.
