WAGNER, Roger

Roger Henry Melchior Wagner was born at Lambeth, London on 28 February 1957, second of the three children of Sir Anthony Richard Wagner (6 September 1908–5 May 1995), Clarenceux King of Arms, and his wife Gillian Mary Millicent Graham (born 25 October 1927), eldest daughter of Major Henry Archibald Roger Graham, who married at Queen's Chapel, Marlborough Gate, London in 1953. His father owned houses in Chelsea Square, London, also at Aldeburgh in Suffolk where young Roger grew up. Roger gained a first-class honours degree in English literature from Lincoln College, Oxford, which was followed as a guest student of Peter Greenham (1909-1992), at the Royal Academy Schools 1978-1981. A visionary painter, wood engraver, translator, author, and poet, who exhibited at Scholar Fine Art; The Brewhouse Gallery; Presence, St Paul's Cathedral and Snape Gallery, Suffolk and elsewhere, with solo shows including at Anthony Mould Contemporary Art from 1985 and his major work 'Menorah' was acquired by the Ashmolean Museum in 2010 and hangs in St Giles Church Oxford. His work has also appeared in several publications, and he has produced several books of illustrated poems and translations including 'Fire Sonnets' (1984), 'In a Strange Land' (1988). He married in London on 24 October 1998, Anne V. T. Myrddin-Evans (born 1958), daughter of Dr. Towry Myrddin-Evans and lives and works in Oxford.
