WARSOP, Mary

1929 - 2006

As Mary Inger, she was born at Nantwich, Cheshire on 20 March 1929, daughter of Alan Inger (31 October 1901-1978) and his wife Elsie Taylor (4 December 1900-25 November 1979), daughter of Alfred John Taylor of Derby, who married at Kedleston Street Primitive Methodist Church, Derby on 22 June 1927. Mary studied at Watford School of Art, St Martin's School of Art, and London University. It was at Watford that she met her future husband, Derek Warsop who, as an amateur painter, encouraged her to continue her studies and whom she married at Watford in 1955, their daughter is Anna Warsop. Mary Warsop's interest in the landscape was long standing and she was fascinated by the effects of time, tide, weather, and season on the land which she introduced into her abstract oils and watercolours, often constructing multiple images which contrast within a single work. From 1963, the Warsop’s lived in Suffolk and Mary lectured on art at Suffolk College for many years. A founder member of the Suffolk Group of Artists and a member of the Ipswich Art Club, where she exhibited from 46 Crabbe Street, Ipswich in 1978, two paintings 'Beach Forms' and 'Tidal Sequence' and was still exhibiting in 1997 'Lavender Fields' and 'Enigma'. Mary Warsop died at Ipswich in 2006. A retrospective exhibition was held of her work at Christchurch Mansion in Ipswich in 1996 and since her death her work has been re-evaluated with a growing body of collectors of her very personal style.
