Enid Wheeler

As Enid Patricia Ward, she was born at Church Street, Stradbroke, Suffolk on 4 March 1929, youngest of the nine children of George Rowell Ward (23 December 1884-1 October 1942), an elder of the local Baptist chapel and the local grocer, and his wife Daisy Marian Miller Carter (21 February 1885-2 July 1986), second daughter of Henry John Carter, stone & marble mason, who married at Halesworth, Suffolk on 1 October 1907 and in 1939 George was a grocer & draper at Church View, Church Street, Stradbroke with two of their children, Arthur George Ward (5 May 1911-19 September 1981) and Alan John Ward (27 November 1915-1997), who both worked in their father's shop. Enid attended Eye Grammar School 1940-1946 and although showing a flair for drawing, unlike her brother Frank Clifford Ward, was not to attend Ipswich Art School. She taught piano and music in Buckinghamshire schools, including Godstone in High Wycombe. She married at Tyler's Green Church, Penn, Buckinghamshire in May 1950, Geoffrey Edmund Wheeler and paints under the name of Enid Wheeler. Enid later returned to Suffolk living at The Windmill, School Lane, Bardwell and re-ignited her interest in art and attended West Suffolk College and studied informally with Christopher Pemberton. Enid concentrated on producing colourful acrylics and pastels and was a member of Suffolk Open Studios, Bury St Edmund's Art Society and exhibited at Bury St Edmund's Cathedral and Blackthorne Barn, Rougham and was the organiser of the annual Bardwell Art Exhibition. Her brother Frank Ward painted her portrait as a young girl in 1941. Enid Patricia Wheeler died on 29 January 2018.
