Enid Wheeler

As Enid Ward, she was born at Stradbroke, Suffolk in 1929, youngest child of George Rowell Ward (23 December 1884-1942), an elder of the local Baptist chapel and the local grocer, and his wife Daisy Marian Miller née Carter (21 February 1885-1986), who married at Blything in 1907 and in 1939 George was a grocer & draper at Church View, Church Street, Stradbroke with their two of their children Arthur G Ward (born 5 May 1911) and Alan J Ward (born 27 November 1915), who both worked in their father's shop. Enid attended Eye Grammar School 1940-1946 and although showing a flair for drawing was, unlike her brother Frank Ward [q.v.], was not to attend Ipswich Art School. She taught piano and music in Buckinghamshire schools, including Godstone in High Wycombe. She married at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire in 1950, Geoffrey Wheeler [q.v.] and works under the name of Enid Wheeler. Enid later returned to Suffolk living at The Windmill, School Lane, Bardwell and re-ignited her interest in art and attended West Suffolk College of Art also studied informally with Christopher Pemberton [q.v.]. She concentrated on producing colourful acrylics and pastels and was a member of Suffolk Open Studios, Bury St Edmund's Art Society and exhibited at Bury St Edmund's Cathedral and Blackthorne Barn, Rougham and was the organiser of the annual Bardwell Art Exhibition. Her brother Frank Ward [q.v.] painted her portrait as a young girl in 1941.
