Born in the Ilford district of Essex in 1960, son of Frank G. Whitnall and his wife Ivy née Barrett, who married at Ilford in 1959. Simon studied art and general design at Suffolk College, Ipswich 1986-1988, obtaining a first-class degree in three-dimensional design, metalwork and silversmithing at Camberwell College of Arts 1989-1992, obtaining his master's at Norwich School of Art 1990-1991. An artist who exhibited at The British Art Metal Society, Student Medal Project; and 'Drawings for All', Gainsborough's House, Sudbury, both in 2000 and 'Over the Water' at Wolsey Art Gallery, Ipswich in 2002. He married at King's Lynn, Norfolk in 1985, Denise J. Sporman and lived at 106 Hardwick Lane, Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk. He recently exhibited at Snape Maltings Gallery; Elements at St Edmund Gallery and at 'Visions of Sudbury' at St Peter's church, Sudbury in 2009 'Autumn Atmospheres' and in 2013 'The Old Grandstand'.
