ALSTON, Mary Eliza

1839 - 1919

Mary Eliza Alston was born at Great Bromley, Essex on 21 October 1839 and baptised at St George's Great Bromley on 25 January 1840, daughter of Edward John Alston (1819-20 September 1886), a farmer, brewer and merchant, and his first wife Mary Kenningale (1819-4 December 1857), eldest daughter of John Garwood Kenningale, who married at Bradfield, Essex on 9 August 1837, Edward married secondly on 30 February 1867, Mary Louisa (1831-1919), widow of William G. Stacy. In 1881 the family were living at Great Bromley Hall, Essex. Mary was an artist and a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1885-1896 but exhibiting from 1882 from Great Bromley Hall, near Colchester, five paintings 'A Group of Objects', 'Not Caught Yet', 'Bridge at Leatherhead, Surrey', 'Winter' and 'Loch Edive, Argyllshire', exhibiting regularly including in 1883 three watercolours ‘A Woodland Path’, 'Evening at the Mill, Ardleigh’ and ‘Cyles Pond Bridge, Great Oakley’, in 1884 three pictures 'Evening brings all Home-View in Ramsey, Essex', 'Old Mill-Evening' and 'Cold Winds Woke the Grey Eyed Dawn' and in 1885 a further three pictures 'Harwich from the Shotley Marina', 'Great Bromley Church, Essex' and 'The Old Hall Farm, Shotley'. Sometime after 1896 she moved to South Africa and Mary Eliza Alston died, at Hopeville, St Gardens, Cape Town on 27 December 1919, she was unmarried and her will was proved by her brother, Alfred Ernest Alston (25 August 1844-23 June 1935), brewer at Manningtree, Essex, at £866 18s 1d. Many of her paintings are in the possession of her relatives.
