ARMSTRONG, Walter Launcelot
Walter Launcelot Armstrong was born at Caterham, Surrey on 3 February 1876, son of Walter Armstrong, a writer on art, and his wife Emily Rose née Ferrard, who married at Hove, Sussex on 11 June 1873. Young Walter was educated at Westminster School for whom he played and excelled at cricket. He joined the army and as a private (28309) serving in the Rand Rifles during the 1899-1902 Boer War and then served in the First World War being promoted to acting Captain 1917 and at the end of hostilities retired from the army with the acting rank of major. He had married at Paddington, London in 1914, Laura Joseph (1876-14 August 1955). On his retirement from the army, they came to Suffolk and Walter took up painting and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1923-1943 and exhibited from Bridge House, Grundisburgh, Suffolk in 1936, a watercolour 'Rail Walk, Sutton Heath'. Walter Launcelot Armstrong died at Bridge House, Grundisburgh on 26 April 1944, aged 68.
