BARTLET, Lucy Elizabeth
As Lucy Elizabeth Townley, she was born at King's Lynn, Norfolk on 23 December 1836 and baptised at St Margaret's church, King's Lynn on 8 March 1837, daughter of Jonathan Townley (1803-26 November 1880), solicitor and treasurer of the County Courts, and his wife Lucy née Taylor (1811-4 May 1883) who married at St Stephen's Church, Norwich on 29 May 1834. Young Lucy married at Lakenham, Norfolk on 2 May 1860, Dr John Henry Bartlet (1829-27 May 1917), an Ipswich physician, and in 1881 was living at 3 Museum Street, Ipswich with her 51-year-old husband and they kept four indoor servants. As Lucy Bartlet, an initial committee member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1874 and exhibited in the Club's first exhibition in 1875 two drawings 'Autumn' and another untitled and in 1876, another drawing 'Beneath those rugged Elms'. Involved in local affairs, including as president of the Ipswich Crèche and hon. sec. of the Eastern Counties' Idiot Asylum. Lucy Elizabeth Bartlet died at her home Birkfield, Belstead Road, Ipswich on 7 January 1911, aged 74 and her husband died at Birkfield, Ipswich on 27 May 1917, aged 87. They had no children and he left £272,430, including a legacy for the erection of the Bartlet Convalescent Home at Felixstowe.
