CLARKE, Emma

1848 - 1917

Emma Clarke was born at Bury St Edmund’s, Suffolk on 11 November 1848 and baptised on 12 April 1849, daughter of William Clarke, a tailor, and his wife Mary Ann née Sparke. In 1861, Emma was a 12-year-old, living at 20 Church Walks, Bury St Edmund’s with her parents, 46-year-old William and 46-year-old mother Mary Ann, a dressmaker, born Bury St Edmund's and Emma's two siblings, James 18 and William 6, both born in Bury St Edmund's. Emma studied at Bury St Edmund's and won prizes for her drawing and exhibited at the London Salon in 1911, from Stamford Villas, 23 Mill Road, Bury St Edmund’s and at the Suffolk Art and Aid Association exhibition at Bury St Edmund's on 28 October 1908, where she won an award for her oil painting. Emma Clarke died in 1917, she was unmarried.
