Paul Biddlecomb

Paul Holman Biddlecombe was born at Guildford, Surrey on 17 June 1911, son of Stuart Holman Biddlecombe (31 December 1879-5 August 1944), archdeacon of Persia, and his wife Florence May née Brooks, who married at Esfahan, Iran on 19 November 1907. Paul was educated at St John's College, Oxford graduating B.A. in 1934 and ordained deacon in 1936 and priest in 1937 of Liss, Hampshire. He married at Bucklow, Cheshire in 1939, Margaret Gwendolin Towle (15 September 1914-4 July 1999). Curate at St Colomba, Fareham 1940-1944 and rector of Greatham, Hampshire 1944-1947 and of Rowner and Bridgemary, Gosport, Hampshire until 1951. Paul then moved to Polstead, Suffolk where he was tutored by artist David Cox and, as a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1954-1969, exhibited from Polstead Rectory, Suffolk in 1954 three paintings 'Shere, Surrey', 'Dirty Corner, Portsmouth Harbour' and 'Benbow Pond, Cowdray Park' and the following year two watercolours 'Snow Scene, Polstead' and 'Watney's Malting, Great Yarmouth'. In 1956 he had on show an oil 'Near Hadleigh' and two watercolours 'Ricks near Nayland' and 'Polstead from Stoke-by-Nayland'. In 1960 he exhibited from The Vicarage, Playford, Ipswich, two oil paintings 'Japanese Girl' and an 'Abstract Painting', in 1964 'An Abstract Colour Theme' and 'Sunflower' and he last exhibited from Playford in 1965, another oil 'Abstract Painting'. After Playford, Biddlecombe was Chaplain of Felixstowe College, Suffolk until his retirement. Paul Holman Biddlecombe died at his home 'Wroxhall', 43 Brook Lane, Felixstowe on 4 July 1986.
