CREWES, Horace James

1883 - 1967

Born at Grampound, Cornwall on 13 December 1883, son of James Francis Crewes (1854-1922), a bank agent, and his wife Grace Ann née Yelland (1857-1932), who married at St Austell, Cornwall in 1881. In 1911, young Horace was a 23 year old bank cashier living at 9 Strangways Terrace, Truro, Cornwall with his parents, 56 year old James and 54 year old Grace, and two siblings. He then joined the army being gazetted Second lieutenant in 1905 but resigned his captain's commission in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry on 24 June 1914. His first wife Alice Margaret née Clarke, whom he married in 1914, died at Cowes and was buried in Northwood Cemetery on 27 March 1917 and he married secondly at Cambridge on 9 October 1921, Frances/Florence Elizabeth Jones (22 February 1894-1981) and came to Ipswich as manager of Lloyds Bank in the town. In 1939, a sub bank manager, living at 119 Henley Road, Ipswich with his wife Florence. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1934-1939 from 119 Henley Road, Ipswich but did not exhibit. He was still living in Henley Road in 1965 but died at Old Park House, Clevedon, Somerset on 22 January 1967.
