DAVIS, Frederick Coulson

1891 - 1965

Frederick Charles Victor Coulson Davis was born on 28 December 1891 and baptised at Leyton, Essex on 13 March 1892, only son of the two children of Frederick John Davis, a school attendance officer, and his wife Alice née Gosden, who married at West Ham in 1891. In 1901, a 19-year-old art student, living at 46 Penge Road, Upton Park, West Ham with his parents, 47-year-old Frederick John and 45-year-old Alice, with sibling sister 15-year-old Gwendoline, an apprentice dressmaker. He was later known at Coulson-Davis. Frederick studied at the Royal College of Art at South Kensington and was assistant art master at Hampstead Garden Suburb School of Art 1919-1922. A commercial artist, woodcarver, etcher and artist in pencil and watercolour, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1926-1933 and in 1927 exhibited from 21 The Avenue, Colchester, Essex, three oils 'Duttons Court, Norwich', 'An Essex Barn' and 'Britons Arms, Norwich', and two pencil drawings 'Nayland Church, Suffolk' and 'Church of St George, Norwich' and 1929 had moved down the road to 15 The Avenue, Colchester from where he exhibited five watercolours 'Dutton Court, Norwich', 'Old Houses, Rouen', 'Langham Mill', 'End of the Fair' and 'A Chemical Factory'. He married, firstly at Kensington, London in 1921, Evelyn Irene Mullens (2 October 1896-1959) and had one son. In 1935, Frederick was headmaster at Chiswick Polytechnic Art School and in 1939, the head of Twickenham Technical College and School of Art, living at 11 Pyrland Road, Richmond, Surrey with his wife Evelyn. He married secondly at Richmond in 1960, Joan Joyce Jones (1921-1973). Frederick Charles Victor Coulson Davis died at 89 Queens Road, Richmond-on-Thames, Surrey on 22 April 1965, aged 73. He signed his works 'F. Coulson Davis'.
