EDWARDES, Sir Stanley De Burgh
Stanley De Burgh Edwardes, sometimes Edwards, was born at Barrackpore, Bengal, India on 22/29 March 1840 and baptised at Barrackpore on 12 June 1842, son of Capt. George Harris Edwards (14 July 1801-22 July 1846), of the Bengal Army, and his wife Rachel née Finch, who married at Calcutta on 12 May 1824. Stanley was educated at Mount Radford School, Exeter and entered the Bengal Army in 1857 and was an officer in the service of the East India Company. He married in India, Adelaide Jane Leckie (1843-26 June 1926) and had issue George Cuthbert Ludovic, born in India on 29 July 1862, Florence Rachel, born in Lowestoft, Suffolk on 16 August 1865, also born in India, John Graham on 9 September 1869, Ada Lillian on 8 August 1871, Alexander Coburn on 15 January 1873 and Emmiline Sybil on 6 March 1877. Colonel of the 102nd Grenadiers, Indian Army in which regiment he served from 1857-1881, major-general 1885 and general 1896. In 1891, a 51-year-old, living at The Croft, Farningham Street, Farningham, Kent with his 47-year-old wife and two daughters, 16-year-old Ida, born at Kensington and 14-year-old Emmiline. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1890-1893 and in 1890, exhibited from Centre Cliff Lodge, Southwold, Suffolk, an oil painting 'On the Alert'. He was knighted K.C.B. on 21 May 1898. Stanley De Burgh Edwardes died at Sponden, Sandhurst, Kent on 24 January 1918, aged 77, and buried in St Nicholas Church, Cranbrook, to be followed by his wife in 1926.
