COBBOLD, Hugh Charles

1908 - 1966

Hugh Charles Cobbold, was born at Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire on 12 July 1908, son of Revd Rowland Francis Cobbold (1857-1945) and his wife Lillian Hope née Parkes (1872-1946). A painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes and rural scenes and a member of Ipswich Art Club 1932-1936, where he exhibited from 54 Burrell Road, Ipswich in 1933 five works ‘Burgh Mill, Norfolk’, Sunshine Vitamins' and watercolours ‘Cattle Sense’, 'The Bury Ipswich Road, via Felsham' and 'Interior'. In 1939, a chartered surveyor staying at the Ironite Hotel, 41-47 High Street, Swansea and he married in Wales in 1940, Kathleen Mary Rowe (1911-1951) and their daughter Jane Mary Cobbold was born in 1946. His wife died in 1951 and Hugh died at Rugby, Warwickshire in 1966, aged 58. His attributed painting 'Bradfield St George Mill' in the Museum of East Anglian Life is dated 1906, two years before his birth and is probably conflated with his 'Burgh Mill, Norfolk.
