FOLKARD, Alice Emma
Alice Emma Folkard was born at Great Horkesley, Essex in 1859, eldest daughter of William Folkard, a farmer, and his wife Emma née Landels, who married at West Ham, Essex on 6 October 1851. In 1861, Alice was a 2-year-old, living at Hunters Farm, Heath Cottages, Lexden, Colchester, Essex, with her parents 30-year-old William, born at Boxted, Essex and 31-year-old Emma, born in London, with three elder brothers, Montague 7, Walter 5 and Frank 3. In 1881, Alice was a 21-year-old farmer's daughter, living at Walnut Tree Farm, Lexden with her parents and two younger siblings Ada 18 and William 16, both born at Lexden. Alice studied at Colchester Literary Institution and won her art certificate at South Kensington School of Art in May 1883. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club and exhibited from Shrub End, [Lexden] Colchester in 1891, three oil paintings 'Fruit and Nest', 'Lilac' and 'Autumn Lilies'. She married at Shrub End, Colchester in May 1899, Robert Slaney (1852-1907), a bookseller, and in 1901, a 41-year-old wife, living at 20 Head Street, Colchester with her 48-year-old husband Robert and a son Robert William Luhoyche Slaney, born at Colchester on 23 August 1900. Her husband died in 1907 and in 1911, Alice was a 49-year-old widow and agent for the Royal Liver Friendly Society, living at 8 Portland Road, Bishop Stortford, Hertfordshire with her 20-year-old son. Alice Emma Slaney died at Bishops Stortford in 1936.
