FORWARD, Frank Randall

1904 - 1978

Frank Randall Forward was born at 2 Mount Pleasant, Reydon, Southwold, Suffolk on 30 April 1904, son of Walter Edward Forward (22 December 1871-2 April 1954), a house decorator, and his wife Ada née Rutterford (25 July 1869-1964), who married at Lakenheath, Suffolk in 1898. In 1911, Frank was a 6-year-old, living at Reydon with his parents, 39-year-old Walter Edward and 41-year-old Ada and three elder brothers, Walter Edmund 11, Stephen Rutterford 10 and Albert Victor 8. Frank's early work as an artist so impressed the local Member of Parliament, Pierce Creagh Loftus (1878-1956) and his artist wife Dorothy Loftus, that they sponsored him at Ipswich School of Art and Frank won a coveted Slade Diploma and a scholarship at the Slade School of Fine Art and afterwards worked for Jeeves, a firm of architects in Hanover Square, London. In 1939, an architectural artist, living at Reydon with his parents and after the Second World War, became a free-lance architect living at Reydon where he took the art classes at the Beccles Youth Centre and at the John Leman School. On 31 January 1953, the sea front at Southwold with its beach huts and pier pavilion, were overwhelmed by the flood tide which Frank Forward witnessed and began his paintings of the scene the same night, they now hang in Southwold Museum. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1956-1968, and in 1960 he exhibited from 9 Elliott Avenue, Reydon, Southwold three oil paintings, 'Winter Evening After Glow', 'Filtering Sunlight' and 'Noon Day Heat'. He married at Westminster, London in 1947, Betty Edith Baggott (1 April 1910-6 October 1998) and they had one son. Frank Randall Forward died at 9 Elliott Avenue, Reydon, Southwold on 2 September 1978.
