FRASER, Eliza Jane
As Eliza Jane Coleby, she was born at Ipswich in 1850 and baptised at St Stephens Church, Ipswich on 20 October 1850, daughter of Kincey Coleby (31 May 1860-14 December 1876), an iron-founder's accountant, and his wife Betsey née Churchyard (c1807-January 1877), who married at Ipswich in 1846. Eliza studied the Ipswich School of Art with contemporaries such as Walter Daniel Batley and Howard Gaye, who all won prizes in 1864. She married at St Margaret's Church, Ipswich on 15 August 1872, Alexander Fraser (1844-1919), a general merchant in clothing, and they went to live at Red House, Little Blakenham, Ipswich. In 1881, 30-year-old Eliza Jane, was living at Red House, Little Blakenham with her 36-year-old husband Alexander, and their five children, Alexander 7, Isobel 6, Violet 5, Cecil 3 and Hilda 1, all born at Great Blakenham, they retained a governess and five indoor servants. In 1891, a 40-year-old, living at Westerfield House, near Ipswich with her 46-year-old husband Alexander and four of their children, Alexander 17, Hilda 11, Hugh 6 and Gordon 1. As Mrs Alexander Fraser, a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1890-1898 and in 1889 exhibited from Westerfield House, near Ipswich, an oil 'Westerfield Church' and in 1891 two oils 'Irises' and 'Westerfield House'. They were still living at Westerfield House in 1901 but by 1911 had moved to Westbury Farm, Offley, Hitchin, Hertfordshire where Eliza Jane Fraser died on 14 July 1919, aged 68, surviving her husband by four months.
