John Henry Grimwade

John Henry Grimwade was born at Ipswich in 1848 and baptised at St Peter's Church, Ipswich on 15 July 1849, son of Richard Grimwade (c1816-1869), woollen draper & hatter, and his wife Eliza Barrow née Langton (1825-1889), who married at St George in the East, London on 29 November 1843. In 1851, John was a 2-year-old, living at Providence Street, Ipswich with his parents, 35-year-old Richard and 29-year-old Eliza, and his elder sister 4-year-old Charlotte. Proprietor of J. H. Grimwade, tailors and outfitters, on the Cornhill, Ipswich, he married at Ipswich on 30 September 1874, Mary Bayley (1848-5 December 1931), daughter of Ipswich shipbuilder William Bayley, and they had eight children. They lived at Richmond House on Handford Road, Ipswich before having Bacton House on Fonnereau Road built. In 1911, a 62-year-old outfitter, living at 61 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich with his 62-year-old wife Mary, and 21-year-old daughter Olive Maud. A former Mayor of Ipswich and a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1912 until his death but does not appear to have exhibited. John Henry Grimwade died at Bacton House, 61 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich on 8 September 1929 and his wife Mary died in 1931, aged 83.
