COLE, Ethel Kathleen

1892 - 1976

Born at Beccles, Suffolk on 11 May 1892, daughter of William Hammond Cole (1837-1917), FRGS, in the India Service, and his wife Josephine Harriet née Johnson, who married Great Dunmow, Essex in 1877. Educated at Croydon High School and Roedean School then studied at the Slade School of Fine Art winning 1st prize for drawing and obtained a 1st class certificate in drawing, paining and perspective. In 1911 an 18 year old art student living at The Dene, East Grinstead, Sussex with her parents, 73 year old William and 52 year old Josephine, and two siblings. A landscape painter in oil and watercolour, black & white and poster artist, illustrator, lithographer and teacher. Ethel exhibited at the Grosvenor Galleries; New English Art Club; Friday Club; Redfern Galleries and the Royal Academy. Living at Clifton, Bristol 1917, Brighton 1918 and London 1919. In 1939 an art teacher living at Flower Lodge, Chailey, Sussex and she died at Lewes, Sussex in 1976, she was unmarried.
