GOSSLING, Phyllis Katharine
Phyllis Katharine Gossling was born at Teddington, Middlesex on 13 November 1892, daughter of Frank Gossling, an examiner in H.M. Patent Office, and his wife Ada Jane née Newberry, who married at St Giles, London in 1888. Phyllis was educated at Croydon High School for Girls winning a £60 annual bursary for the Royal Holloway College at the University of London. In 1911, an 18-year-old, living at 15 Birdhurst Road, Croydon with her parents, 51-year-old Frank and 47-year-old Ada, with four siblings, Frank Newberry 22, Brian Stephen 20, Hugh Foley 16 and Helen Florence Mary 13. Phyllis obtained a B.Sc.(hons) degree at London University and trained as a teacher at Clapham High School. Assistant Mistress at St Leonard's School, Fife 1916-1919, and Tunbridge Wells High School 1919-1935 and several other appointments at Croydon, Enfield, Hitchin, Leeds and at Wakefield. In 1939 was a teacher living at Agbrigg Road, Wakefield, Yorkshire and by 1945 was Chemistry Mistress at Ipswich High School for Girls in Westerfield Road, Ipswich. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1946-1950 and exhibited from Pendine St Mary, Bourne, Andover in 1949 a watercolour, 'Woodside, Belstead Road' [Ipswich] and two watercolours the following year 'Near Flatford' and 'Near Mullion' [Cornwall]. Phyllis Katharine Gossling died at Hillside, 1 Cull Lane, New Milton, Hampshire on 4 March 1975, she was unmarried.
