HARRIS, William Levi
William Levi Harris was born at Chetnole, Yetminster, Dorset on 4 April 1869 and baptised on 18 May 1869, son of William Harris (1839-), a baker, and his wife Maria née Symes (1835-), who married at Sherborne, Dorset in 1865. In 1871, young William was a 2-year-old, living at Middle Street, Chetnole with his parents, 32-year-old William and 35-year-old Maria, and newly born sibling brother Jonathan. William studied at St Thomas Science and Art School at Exeter, Devon passing examination in 1896. He married at Exeter in 1906, Dorothy Nellie Lawrence (1882-1970) and in 1911, a 41-year-old schoolmaster, living at Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset with his 32-year-old wife Dorothy and their 3-year-old son Walter Tom William George Harris (1909-1966), born at Bosham, Sussex. In 1920, a teacher at Argyle Street School, Ipswich, when he registered on the Teacher's Registration Council Registers living at 19 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich with their son and a newly born daughter, Joan. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1923-1938 and exhibited from 12 Museum Street, Ipswich in 1924, five watercolours 'Rock Ford', 'Lyn Falls', 'The Beech Wood', 'Lock at Sproughton' and 'The Path thro' the Woods'. By 1931 he had moved to Brooke House, Henley Road, Whitton-cum-Thurleston, Ipswich from where he exhibited in 1931, three pictures 'Evening after the Storm', 'Corbyn's Head, S. Devon' and 'Passing Cloud, Cornish Coast'. In 1939, a retired schoolmaster from a former school at Brooke House, Henley Road, Ipswich, latterly a Nursing Home, and where he died on 23 February 1942. His wife continued running Brooke House Nursing Home, where she died on 1 January 1970, when Brooke House was demolished, and Epsom Drive/Defoe Road housing built.
