HARRISON, Coela Elizabeth L'Estrange Pryce

1885 - 1975

As Coela Elizabeth L'Estrange Herring, she was born at The Old Rectory, Thorpe, Norwich on 22 April 1885, daughter of Capt. Henry L'Estrange Herring (1832-1912), of the 87th Irish Fusiliers, and his second wife, Emma, daughter of Col William Welsby of Southport, who married on 27 April 1881. Educated at St Felix School, Southwold, Suffolk and studied art at St Ives, Cornwall under Leonard Fuller (1891-1973), Heatherly's under Iain McNab (1890-1967) and at Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk under David Cox [q.v.]. Coela married at Muree, Bengal, India on 18 September 1907, Brigadier Arthur Howarth Pryce Harrison (born 14 July 1871), then a captain in the 33rd Punjabi Indian Army, and they had two children, Hugh Devereaux Harrison born in Bengal on 24 June 1908 and Coela Myfanwy Devereaux Pryce Harrison. An artist in watercolour and a member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1951-1952 from London and Norwich, and an associate member of Ipswich Art Club 1960-1961 and exhibited from Casa Pantis, West Mersea, Colchester in 1960, three pictures, an oil 'Early Autumn, Suffolk' and two watercolours 'October Sun, Tossa, Spain' and 'Early Summer at Polstead, Suffolk'. She also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Society of Women Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour and in Norfolk also in Simla, India and in Malta. The family seem to have spent most of their time in the United States of America or in Ireland. In 1939 living on 'private means' at Ditchingham Cottage, Loddon, Norfolk with her husand and daughter Coela. In 1954 she was living at 'Paddocks', Dedham, Essex. She died in the Exeter district of Devon early in 1975. She is sometimes conflated with her daughter but C. Elizabeth L'Estrange worked in watercolour and signed her work C. Pryce Harrison.
