HOLLINGSWORTH, Ruth

1880 - 1945

Ruth Hollingsworth was born at Clapham, London on 29 August 1880, fourth of the five daughters of Alexander Thomas Hollingworth (1847-31 December 1928), a newspaper proprietor, and his wife Charlotte Ellen née Allen (1848-1 November 1939), who married at Strand, London in 1870. Ruth was educated at Hamilton House, Tunbridge Wella and in Lausanne, Switzerland and studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and the North London School of Art. In 1911, a 30-year-old artist, and together with her 29-year-old sister Jessie, visiting 36-year-old Henry Dixon, an art advisor, at his home at Whilow Croft, Sheffield. She exhibited at Hampstead Art Society from 1907, Sheffield Art Society from 1910 and Goupil Gallery, London from 1912. In 1915 she exhibited at McLean's Gallery, Haymarket 'Carnations & Violets' and 'China Ducks' and 1916 exhibited at the Women's International Art Club an oil 'Blue China' held at the Georgian Gallery at Waring & Gillows, London when, as Hon. Secretary was presented to the then Queen Mary. Ruth married at St Peter's Church, Belsize Square, Hampstead, London on 26 April 1917, artist Richard Sydney Hellaby but continued to exhibit as Ruth Hollingsworth. Ruth exhibited at the Royal Academy, she also showed at the New English Art Club and was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1932-1939, exhibiting in 1932 as Miss Hollingsworth (Mrs Hellaby) from Woodlands, Holbrook, Ipswich, five oils, 'Italian Landscape', 'The Chrystal Rabbit', 'The Kitchen Garden', 'October' and 'Bowl of Flowers' and from 1933, under a mixture as Miss Hollingsworth in the index and Mrs R. S. Hellaby on the painting (104), 'The Pine Apple', in 1935 she exhibited four oil paintings, 'Near Villars', 'Flower Piece', 'Coast near Capetown' and 'Homeward Bound'. In 1937 she exhibited as Ruth Hellaby from Lower Park, Dedham, Essex two oils, 'Flower Piece' and 'Flowers'. In 1939, whilst living at Lower Park, Dedham, Essex, she gives her birth year as 1881 but GRO says 1880, with her husband Richard, and where Ruth Hellaby died on 14 March 1945, aged 63, leaving the then substantial sum of over £45,000. She signed her works 'Ruth Hollingsworth' block letters.
