HUGHES, Arthur Foord

1856 - 1934

Arthur Foord Hughes was born at Pimlico, London on 9 October 1856, eldest of the five children of artist & book illustrator Arthur Hughes (27 January 1832-23 December 1915) and his former model and wife Tryphena née Foord (1828-26 February 1921), who married at Holy Trinity, Maidstone, Kent on 26 November 1855. Young Arthur was instructed and followed in his father's footsteps as an artist but used the name of Arthur Foord Hughes to differentiate him from his father. Young Arthur was educated at King's College School and studied at Heatherley School of Fine Art, the Slade School of Fine Art and finally at the Royal Academy Schools where he emulated his father in winning a silver medal in his first year. In 1871, a 14-year-old, living at Finborough Road, Kensington, London with his parents, 39-year-old Arthur and 41-year-old Tryphena, and siblings Amy 13 and Agnes 11, both born in London, Emily 9 and Godfrey 5, born at Putney but by 1881 the family had moved to Hackbridge Road, Wallington, Croydon where young Arthur was a 24-year-old art student. A landscape and genre painter and a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1890-1897 and in 1891, a 34-year-old unmarried artist, living at The Studios, Thurloe Square, Kensington. He married at Chelsea in 1893, Elizabeth Jones and in 1901, a 44-year-old painter artist, living at 7 Albert Mansions, Albert Bridge Road, Battersea with his 37-year-old wife Elizabeth but by 1911 they had moved to 'The Pines', Pett, near Hastings, Sussex. Past President of the East Sussex Arts Club, where he was sometime the secretary. As Arthur Foord Hughes, he was of 130 Harold Road, Hastings when he died at Dilkusha Nursing Home, Fairlight Road, Hastings on 20 July 1934, aged 78. He illustrated 'Windmills in Sussex' (1930).
