JOHNSON, Alice
Alice Johnson was born at High Street, Cherryhinton, Cambridgeshire in 1868, eldest child of Oliver William Johnson, a colliery agent, and his wife Elizabeth née Thompson, who married at Easton, Lincolnshire in 1865. In 1880 they moved to Ipswich and in 1881, 13-year-old Alice, was living at 78 Victoria Street, Ipswich with her parents, 39 year old Oliver, now a coal merchant who was born at Kilbury, Worcestershire, and 36-year-old Elizabeth born at Easton, Lincolnshire, with six siblings Frank 11, Montagu 9, Oliver 6, Kate 4, Harry 2, all born in Cambridgeshire and newly born Lawrence, born at Ipswich, they went on to have two more children Elizabeth and Ralph. Alice studied at Ipswich School of Science and Art winning awards for her sketching in 1893. In 1901, a 33-year-old artist painter, living at 'Parkside', Murray Road, Ipswich with her parents and five siblings. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1901-1909 and exhibited from Parkside, Murray Road, Ipswich in 1900, an oil 'Roses' and in 1901 five oil paintings three entitled 'Roses' plus 'Wallflowers' and 'Pansies'. In 1902, she exhibited from 101 Fore Street, Ipswich three paintings, 'Yellow Chrysanthemums', 'Wallflowers' and 'Roses' and in 1905 from Oxford House, 224 Felixstowe Road, Ipswich two oils 'Roses' and 'Apples' and her last exhibits were in 1909 when she had on show 'La France-Roses' and a regular exhibitor of flower paintings. By 1911, Alice had left Ipswich, but her father Oliver and his wife were living at 204 Felixstowe Road Ipswich with their married daughter Elizabeth [Smith]. Alice Johnson died at Ipswich in 1952.
