JUDGE, William Ernest

1890 - 1973

William Ernest Judge was born at Pembroke Dock, Hampshire on 12 December 1890, only child of Irish born Thomas Patrick Judge (1854-1927), a soldier, and his wife Emlie Helen née Jeffries (1862-17 November 1932), who married at Portsea Island, Hampshire in 1888. William studied art in Birmingham and in 1911, a 20-year-old photographer, living at 61 Meon Road, Plymouth, Hampshire with his parents, 61-year-old Thomas, an army pensioner, and 51-year-old Emlie. During the First World War he served as a photographer draughtsman in the Royal Air Force and in 1921 was a commercial artist living with his parent at 36 St Georges Square, Portsea, Hampshire. A painter, etcher and commercial artist and a drawing master and a member of the Portsmouth and Hampshire Art Society where he exhibited from 57 Shakespeare Road, Portsmouth from 1921. In 1939, a R.A.F. Instructor, living at 23 Brookes Street, Hove, Sussex, when he seems to have adjusted his birth year to 1892. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1949-1972 exhibiting in 1948 from Malt Cottage, Lambs Corner, Dedham, Essex, a watercolour 'Blythburgh', in 1949 four watercolours 'Old Pack Bridge, Galloway', 'Passing Storm, Walberswick', 'A Mountain, Lochlan, Galloway' and 'Woodbridge from Sutton Hoo', he exhibited three watercolours in 1950 and in 1951 an oil 'Sketch at West Malling, Kent' and three watercolours 'Walberswick', 'Arran Holiday' and 'La Lavior, Honfleur', his last exhibit was in 1951 an oil 'Walberswick Marshes'. William Ernest Judge died at 'Silfield', Capel St Mary, near Ipswich, Suffolk on 6 July 1973. He signed his works 'W. E. Judge' block letters.
