LADELL, Ellen Maria

1854 - 1928

As Ellen Maria Levett, she was born at Ipswich in 1854, daughter of George Levett, a smith, and his wife Maria née Wells, who married at Framlingham, Suffolk in 1841. In 1861, a 7 year old living at 30 Borough Road, Ipswich with her parents, 48 year old George and 49 year old Maria, with two elder siblings, Henry 18 and Louisa 16, both born at Framlingham and a younger sister, 4 year old Kate, also born at Ipswich. She went to South Side Diocesan Training Institution For Governesses, St George Plain, Coslany, Norwich where she was in training in 1871, giving her name as Helen and age as 18. She married at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk in 1878 as his second wife, 56 year old artist Edward Ladell [q.v.] and in 1881 a 26 year old living at 99 Sidwell Street, Exeter, Devon with her 59 year old husband Edward and their 2 year old son Kenwyn, born Torquay. A painter in a style almost identical to her husband's usually signing with her full name, whereas Edward used the EL monogram back-to-back. A member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Art Club 1884-1890 exhibiting an oil in 1883 from 99 St Sidwell's, Exeter, 'Fruit, Roses and Still Life' and in 1884 'Fruit and Flowers' (1884). Her husband died in 1886 and she married again at Exeter in 1889, George Turner White, divisional insurance superintendent of South West. She died at East Preston, Sussex in 1928, aged 75.
