LINGWOOD, Harold Robert

1892 - 1975

Harold Robert Lingwood was born at Creeting St Mary, near Ipswich on 21 June 1892 and baptised at Creeting St Mary Church on 20 July 1892, eldest son of Robert Henry Lingwood (25 December 1851-23 February 1909), a miller & merchant, and his wife Anna Elizabeth née Taylor, who married at Tendring, Essex in 1891. Educated at Theobald's Endowed Grammar School, Needham Market and at the Ipswich School. His father was accidental drowned near his home at Creeting in 1909 and in 1911, Harold was an 18-year-old insurance clerk, living at 15 Richmond Road, Ipswich with his 45-year-old maiden aunt Alice Gertrude Lingwood. In 1913 he was the author of a children's book of verse 'Golden Glow and Sombre Shade' and during the First World War, he enlisted in the London Rifle Brigade and Artists' Rifles, seeing active service in France and Flanders January 1917 to March 1918 and after the war served in the Suffolk Special Constabulary 1926-1945. A journalist on the 'East Anglian Daily Times' as ‘Rambler’ and as ‘Drummond Fyfe’ in the 'East Anglian Magazine'. Harold married at Shimpling Parish Church, Suffolk on 26 April 1939, Elsie Rosa Stearn (1 March 1896-12 October 1981) of Shimpling Place, near Diss, Norfolk but in 1939 were living back at 15 Richmond Road, Ipswich. A member of the Ipswich Art Club exhibiting watercolours from Bosmere House, Martlesham, near Ipswich in 1947 'Home of the Hathaways, Shottery' and 'Near Seckford Hall', in 1948 'May Morning, Martlesham', in 1949 'Skyscape' and 'Cottages near Eyke' and in 1950 'Brampton Abbots Church, Herefordshire' and 'Block's Barn, Melton, Suffolk'. In 1951 he exhibited 'Trees at Brightwell' and the following year 'Loan Oak, Parham' and 'Thistles' and his last exhibits were in 1952 'By the Weir, Bakewell' and 'By-pass, Martlesham'. Harold Robert Lingwood died at 19 Cherry Tree Road, Woodbridge, Suffolk on 9 November 1975. (Copsey-Suffolk Writers 1800-1900. Ipswich 2002)
