LONGE, Roland Bacon

1904 - 1990

Born at Hereford, Herefordshire on 7 October 1904, son of Arthur Bacon Longe (died 1956), a land agent, and his wife Winifred Agnes née Bridgford, who married at Hereford in 1903. In 1911, a 6 year old living at Pettistree Grange, Woodbridge, Suffolk with his parents, 42 year old Arthur and 37 year old Winifred, with three indoor servants. A career soldier in the King's Shropshire Light Infantry, 2nd Lieut 1924, Lieut. 1926, Captain 1935, Major 1940 retiring with the rank of Lieut. Col. serving on the N.W. Frontier of India 1930-1931. He married at Shifnal, Shropshire in 1933, Diana Hastings [Longe q.v.] and they had four children. In 1938, the family moved to Jamaica, where Roly was stationed for four years, during which time his wife Diana worked in Kingston decoding military information for the government. On his retirement he returned to Suffolk living at Hasketon Grange, near Woodbridge. A member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1971 and exhibited from Hasketon Manor, Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1977, two portraits 'Alice Talbot Brown' and 'Miss Erika Mason' and a further two pictures the following year. A regular exhibitor until his death including 'Barge at Ipswich', 'Edward Martin, Esq.', 'Miss Sophie Pryor' and 'Mrs. Edward Martin, Ph.D.' all 1980. He died at Hasketon Manor in 1990.
