COOP, Hubert

William Hubert Coop was born at Olney, Buckinghamshire on 8 March 1872, son of Revd Thomas Coop (1840-29 July 1897), an independent minister and life assurance manager, and his second wife, Martha Elizabeth Brown (15 September 1850-27 October 1941), only daughter of the late Edward Pilkington Brown, builder, of Oundle, who married at the Congregational Church, Olney on 21 September 1869. Thomas married his first wife, Catherine Jane Stovin (16 March 1837-5 December 1867) at Louth Lincolnshire in 1865. In 1871, 30-year-old William was living at High Street, Olney with his 20-year-old wife Martha, and his children Tom Stovin 5 and Frank Riley 2 both born in Birmingham, and their first newly born child Edward John. Hubert, as he was known, was educated at Birmingham and in 1881 he, and his elder brother Edward and younger brother Charles, were boarders at a school kept by David Purdon at 9 George Street, Wolverhampton. In 1891, his father Thomas, now noted as a manager for a life insurance company, and his wife Martha were living at 1 The Mount, Gladstone Road, Aston, Birmingham, where William Hubert was a 19-year-old draughtsman in a railway carriage works. After a brief period in business, Hubert went on to study at the Lincoln School of Art, where he obtained a First Class Degree in Design. A landscape and coastal painter, and in 1895, when living at Birmingham, elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. He married at Saffron Walden, Essex in 1897, Margaret Winifred Barton (31 August 1874-11 April 1952) and in 1901, a 29-year-old artist living at Prevwylfa, Conway, Wales with his 25-year-old wife. He painted in North Wales and in the West Country and exhibited at the Royal Academy in most years 1897-1918, also showing at the Birmingham Royal Society of British Artists; Fine Art Society; Walker Gallery, Liverpool; Royal Cambrian Academy of Art and at the Royal Institute of Painters In Water Colours, from Birmingham, Conway in 1899, from Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1912 and Bideford, Devon in 1920. In 1910 he had living with him fellow artist Edmurd Aubrey Hunt and in 1911, a 39-year-old artist painter living at 280 London Road South, Lowestoft, Suffolk with his 35-year-old wife Winifred, when using just his second name of Hubert, and where he continued to paint coastal scenes and windmills around Southwold and up the coast into the Norfolk Broads. He then resided in St Ives, Huntingdonshire for a brief period, before taking up residence in Kettering, Northamptonshire and his 1918 entry to the Royal Academy has his address at Newland Street, Kettering. By 1921 he had moved to Cleave Barton, Northam, Devon, where he remained for the rest of his life. William Hubert Coop died at Goats Hill, Northam, Devon on 14 January 1953, aged 80. He signed his works 'Hubert Coop'.
