RAY, Frederick Harrington

1860 - 1919

Frederick Harrington Ray was born at Norwich on 17 February 1860, but not baptised at St Peter Hungate, Norwich until 22 October 1884, son of Orlando Dennis Ray (c1826-29 May 1900), auctioneer, and his wife Betsy Harriet née Dakin (8 August 1831-18 November 1895), who married at St James's, Westminster, London on 8 October 1853. In 1871, Frederick was an 11-year-old, living at Thorpe Road, Norwich with his parents, 43-year-old Orlando and 39-year-old Betsy, with five siblings, George Edward 19, Bessie Mary 15, Gertrude Howard 13, Catherine Lucy Davey 7 and Ethel Maud 4, all born in Norfolk. Frederick entered his father's auctioneering business and in 1891, a 31-year-old auctioneer & valuer, living with his parents at Ivy Cottage, Thorpe Road, Norwich. He married at Holy Trinity, South Heigham, Norwich on 28 January 1892, Frances Anne Flatt (2 October 1867-18 August 1917). His father died at Norwich in 1900, aged 74, and in 1901 Frederick was living at 135 Newmarket Road, Norwich with his 32-year-old wife and by 1911 a 51-year-old auctioneer, valuer, and estate agent, living at 3 Thorpe Dene, Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich with his 42-year-old wife Frances and sons Reginald Harrington 17, a bank clerk, and Dennis Frederick Harrington 10. A member and exhibitor at the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1885-1907 from Thorpe, Norwich and a member of the Ipswich Art Club in 1897, exhibiting from 37 Grove Road, Ipswich Road, Norwich in 1897, twelve oil paintings 'Sunset, Thorpe Village', 'Study of Trees, Keswick, near Norwich', 'View from the Butt and Oyster, Pin Mill', 'The Eek Babber, Sunset', 'On the Marshes', 'Belaugh, near Wroxham', 'Keswick Mill Stream near Norwich', 'The Alder Car, Norwich', 'Deserted, Wherry at Postwick on the Yare', 'Allen's Dyke, Coltishall' and 'Reed Boats in the Dyke, Coltishall'. Frederick Harrington Ray died at 3 Thorpe Dene, Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich on 19 March 1919, aged 60. His wife Frances had died at Framlingham Hall, Suffolk on 18 August 1917, aged 49. Keys Fine Art Auctioneers of Aylsham had his painting 'Norfolk Wherry, Stiff Breezer at Horning' up for auction.
