READ, Nöel

1890 - 1977

Nöel Read was born at Fulham, London on 25 December 1890, daughter of Herbert Read (1861-6 August 1935), an architect, and his wife Kate Youngs (1869-1937), daughter of Robert Carss Youngs (25 August 1828-29 October 1894) of Rookery Park, Yoxford, who married at Yoxford Parish Church, Suffolk on 12 June 1889. In 1911, Nöel was a 20-year-old, living at 31 Grove End Road, Marylebone, London with her parents, 49-year-old Herbert and 41-year-old Kate. As Miss Nöel Read, member of the Ipswich Art Club 1928-1955 exhibiting from 16 Cork Street, London in 1927, five watercolours of scenes near Ipswich 'Tuddenham', 'Parham Moat Hall', 'Grundisburgh', 'Sutton Hoo', 'The River Deben, Woodbridge' and a still life 'Nasturtiums', in 1932 from 2 Bloomsbury Place, London six works, 'Wallflowers', 'Anenomes', 'Campsea Ash Mill', 'A Basket of Primroses', 'Canvey Island from Leigh-on-Sea' and 'Old Town, Leigh-on-Sea', in 1935 four works 'Wisteria on the Mount Road, Madiera', 'A Madiera Garden', 'Funchal from the Beach' and 'The Market Square, Funchal', and in 1937 from Greenbanks, Salcombe, Devon, four works 'Slaughden, Aldeburgh', 'Low Tide, Leigh-on-sea' and watercolours 'Herzogin Castle' and 'Old Town, Leigh-on-sea', in all she exhibited some 60 works. In 1939, Nöel Read was living at Green Banks, Fortescue Road, Salcombe, Devon and where she died on 10 January 1977, she was unmarried.
