CORY, Grace Margaret
As Grace Margaret Gross, she was born at Rickinghall Superior, Suffolk on 24 April 1863, daughter of Woolnough Gross (1825-17 July 1894), a solicitor, and his wife Anne Eliza Maria Wythe (1823-28 December 1913), only surviving daughter of the late John Wythe of Chandos Lodge, Eye, Suffolk, who married at St Mary's Church, Islington on 9 December 1847. In 1881, Grace was a 17-year-old, living at 6 Crown Street, Bury St Edmund’s, Suffolk with her parents, 55-year-old Woolnough, born Alderton and 57-year-old Anne, born at Eye, both in Suffolk, and three siblings, Alice Maud Mary 29, Ada Mary Elizabeth 23, and Charles James 21. Grace married at Bury St Edmund’s in 1884, Revd Charles Page Cory (16 June 1859-7 November 1942), rector and rural dean of Wilford and her husband took a position as vice-principal as St Paul’s College in Madagascar. By 1891 they were back in England lodging at New Street, Sedburgh, Yorkshire, Charles a 31 year old clerk in holy orders, born Carlisle, Cumberland and Grace and their two children, Robert Francis Preston 5 and Charles Woolnough 3, both born at Madagascar but the following year they were in Burma where her husband was elected archdeacon of Rangoon in 1906 returning to England in 1915 to the living of the rectory of Campsey Ash, Suffolk. Grace exhibited at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool 1928-1929 from Campsey Ash Rectory, Suffolk. In 1939, Grace and her husband were living at Star Cross, Warren Hill, Woodbridge, Suffolk. Grace Margaret Cory was of St Joseph's Guest House, Woodbridge when she died at Chevington Lodge Nursing Home, Flixton Road, Bungay, Suffolk on 5 December 1953, aged 90, of her sons, Charles Woolnough Cory was killed in action at Gallipoli on 12 August 1916 and Robert Francis Cory became a surgeon and a vice-admiral in the Navy.
