SYKES, Ivy

1896 - 1984

As Ivy Wilks, she was born at 19 Providence Street, Farsley, North Bierley, Yorkshire on 9 August 1896, daughter of William Wilks, a plumber, and his wife Harriet née Gillard, who married at Newport, Monmouthshire in 1888. In 1911, a 14 year old 'winder' living at 5 North View, Armley, Leeds with her parents, 48 year old William and 49 year old Harriet, and siblings, James William 22, Wilfred 20, Horace 19, Elsie, 16 and Sam 12. Ivy married at Bramley, Yorkshire in 1921, Arthur Preston Sykes (1895-1988) and in 1939 living at The Cottage, Haigh Moor Road, Morley, Yorkshire with her husband Arthur and two children 16 year old Ivy May [Austin] and 13 year old Dorothy [Chambers]. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1970-1973 and as Mrs I. Sykes, exhibited from Garrold's, Oak Lane, Dedham, Essex in 1969 an oil 'Forsythia' and in 1971 'The Edge of the Woods'. She died at Ipswich in 1984 and her husband died at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in 1988.
