STOKES, Allen Folliot Gardiner

1855 - 1939

Born at Goring, Oxfordshire on 10 January 1855, eldest child of Revd William Henry Stokes (1815-1898), vicar of Goring, and his wife Emily Sophia née Gardiner (1831-1886), who married at Cookham, Surrey in 1852. In 1861, a 4 year old living at Goring Village, Berkshire with his parents, 45 year old William and 29 year old Emily, with three siblings, Emily Dorothea 4, Francis Harry 2 and newly born Edith Mary. He went to a private school at Drayton, Abingdon, Berkshire run by A. J. Williams and he became a land agent. I 1881, a 26 year old house & land agent, boarding at 64 Whitburn Street, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, the home of widow Sarah Taylor and her family. He married at Wokingham, Berkshire on 6 November 1882, Charlotte Vansittart Frere when Allen seems to have retired and took up painting. In 1891 a 36 year old artist painter, together with his 45 year old wife and 7 year old daughter, Muriel Charlotte Folliot [Brown 1884-1961], were visitors at 20 The Terrace, St Ives, Cornwall, the home of 70 year old shipwright William Berriman and his wife. A landscape painter and a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1889-1890, in 1889 at The Cottage, Southwold, Suffolk and the following year at 2 Draylot Cottages, St Ives, Cornwall also exhibiting at the Royal Academy; Royal Society of British Artists and Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery. In 1901 he had a studio at 11 Bedford Road, St Ives and his wife and daughter were living at 7 Regent Terrace, Penzance, Cornwall. In 1911 he had turned to being an author and was living at Sea View Terrace, St Ives and was the author of several books about Cornwall including 'From St Ives to Land's End' (1908); 'From Land's End to the Lizard' (1909); 'From Devon to St Ives' (1910) and 'The Cornish Coast and Moors' (1912). His wife died in Devon in 1916, aged 69 and Allen died at 57 Panton House, Bath Road, Reading, Berkshire on 17 October 1939, aged 84. During his life he changed his first names to Allen Gardiner Folliot Stokes then hyphenated them to Allen Gardiner Folliot-Stokes.
