COTTINGHAM, Eliza Ann

1834 - 1900

As Elizabeth Ann Johnson, she was born in London on 18 April 1834, and baptised at St Leonard’s, Shoreditch on 18 April 1836, daughter of James Johnson and his wife Sophia. She married at Holmwood, Surrey on 15 October 1862, Dublin born Edward Roden Cottingham, a major in the Royal Artillery (active). In 1881 they were living at Derby Lodge, 222 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich with their four children, 17 year old Rosa Minnie, born Chatham, Kent, 16 year old Florence, born Southend, Essex, 10 year old Rosetta Jane, born Plymouth, Devon and 9 year old Henry Langris, born Sheffield, and they kept two servants. In 1882 Eliza exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club from Woodbridge Road, Ipswich, two watercolours 'Bonchurch, Isle of Wight' and 'Study of Trees, Keston, Kent' but by 1891 the family had moved to Bassett Mount, North Stoneham, Hampshire where Edward was a ‘retired colonel’. Eliza Ann Cottingham died in 1900 when Edward moved to Hermits Hill, Burghfield, Berkshire.
