WALLIS, Walter Cyril

1890 - 1974

Walter Cyril Wallis was born at 20 Spencer Road, Croydon, Surrey on 9 July 1890, second child and eldest son of the five children of Walter Wallis (1853-22 January 1934), art teacher principal, and his wife Fanny Louise née Manley (1859-), who was born in Paris, and who married in London in 1882. In 1911, Walter was a 20-year-old art student, living at 20 Spencer Road, Croydon with his parents, 57-year-old Walter and 52-year-old Louise and siblings, Elsie Dora 26, art student, Charles Frederick 19, art student and Constance Louise, a 14-year-old student, all born at Croydon. The 'Edinburgh Gazette' of 9 January 1920 reports young Walter's appointment as assistant in the Art Branch of the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh and was an Associate of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art, exhibiting at least two pictures from 53 Spottiswood Street, Edinburgh in 1929 including a watercolour 'Holy Trinity Church, Dean Village'. In 1921 his father Walter was a retired art master living at Brook House, Dedham, Essex and from where his son Walter was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1921-1930 and had exhibited in 1920 from The Old House Hotel, Dedham, two works 'Dedham Church from the Meadows' and a pastel 'Stour, Dedham' and in 1923 from Brook House, Dedham, four oil paintings 'A Ride on the Gate', 'The Beehive', 'Spring' and 'Girl and Calf', in 1924 seven works 'The Elm Tree', 'The Lock Keeper's House', 'Hawthorn Blossom', 'Bend on the Stour', 'Dedham Lock' and 'Willows on the Stour' and in 1927 eight oil paintings 'The Orchard', 'Waiting for a Bite', 'Chanctonbury Ring', 'Cabbages, Vouvray', 'By the River, Dedham', 'Running', 'Steyning Church' and 'Hawthorn by the Stour' and was a regular exhibitor. He could have been conflated with his artist father who died at Brook House, Dedham, Essex on 22 January 1934, but Walter Cyril's membership at Ipswich clearly states A.R.C.A., of which his father was not an associate. Walter Cyril Wallis died at Twyford Abbey Nursing Home, Twyford Abbey Road, London NW.10 on 20 November 1974.
