WATSHAM, Charles William
Charles William Watsham was born at Eye, Suffolk on 21 July 1906, second son of Charles William Watsham (12 October 1876-7 January 1945) and his wife Lizzie Mary née Ward (20 June 1877-1970), who married at Brightlingsea, Essex in 1897, where his father was a good's clerk on the Great Eastern Railway and in 1939, they were living at 42 John Street, Brightlingsea, Essex. In 1911, young Charles was a 4-year-old, living at 3 Easton Road, Witham, Essex with his parents, 34-year-old Charles and 33-year-old Lizzie and his elder brother, 11-year-old John Arthur Charles. Young Charles was educated at King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford 1918-1924. An architect, who was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1927-1934 from 36 King George's Avenue, Dovercourt, Essex but does not seem to have exhibited but in 1944 he instigated the 'Watsham Art Prize' at his old Chelmsford school. He married in the Tendring district of Essex in 1937, Flora Mary Sherman (18 May 1916-10 June 1973) and they had two children. Whilst Charles was serving in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War, his wife was living at 'Floradene', Franks Avenue, Harwich, Essex, with her parents. In February 1948 Charles moved from being town planning assistant at Norwich to be county architect and planning officer of Radnorshire, Wales but on retirement returned to live in East Anglia. Charles William Watsham died at his home at 5 Pearce Road, Stanway, Colchester on 28 November 1972.
