COULTER, Michael John

1937 - ?

Born at 19 Talbot Street, Ellesmere, Shropshire in 1937, son of Revd John James Coulter (15 August 1909-1965) and his wife Elizabeth M. née Hughes (born 20 February 1907), who married at Ellesmere in 1936. He studied at Hereford, Stafford and Leeds Colleges of Art. Head of Art at Woolverstone School, Ipswich, Suffolk from 1966 to 1987, since then he has been painting full time. He works exclusively in watercolour, depicting everyday life in his own unmistakeably light-hearted style, with movement, pattern, colour and gentle humour. Michael Coulter exhibited at the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours 1983-1985, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 1983-1986, Peter Hedley Gallery, Wareham from 1989 and The Comos, Washington, USA and throughout the UK and abroad and his work is closely associated with the John Russell Gallery in Ipswich. His work is held in many private, corporate and public collections, including that of the Borough of Ipswich at the Christchurch Mansion.
